What is SIP?

Real-time person-to-person communication is the next big step of Internet usage. SIP is the Internet standard for such communication.
SIP = Session Initiation Protocol
SIP is an Internet protocol for live communication between persons. It is a signalling protocol used for establishing sessions in an IP network. A session can be a simple two-way telephone call or it can be a collaborative multi-media conference session. The ability to establish these sessions means a host of innovative services become possible, such as instant messaging, presence, voice and video communication, data collaboration, application sharing, and much more.

  Some of the features available with SIP communication.

Just like HTTP created the web and SMTP created email, SIP is creating the next big use of the Internet; real-time communication between persons. SIP is also the protocol of choice when making new IP telephony (VoIP - Voice over IP) installations, which is evidenced by its support from Microsoft, MCI, AT&T and many others.

Real global connectivity
The real application for VoIP, where IP telephones connected to the Internet really can reach each other globally is only now being realized. With this level of connectivity, more advanced IP telephones with new functionality (image transmission and other useful features) can be expected.

Through the SIP capable Intertex Internet Gate, SIP users on the LAN have global reach to and from all SIP clients connected to the Internet. There is no longer a need for VoIP to be limited to only replicating old telephony systems, nor need VoIP be implemented in small islands only interoperating over the telephone network.
