What Do You Need?

So, what do you need to get started with real-time communication based on SIP? If you use a dial-up connection you can start communicating via SIP directly. All you need is Windows Messenger 5.1, which is a SIP based software included in Windows XP. You can also download it here.

Note! When upgrading your Microsoft Windows XP System with Service Pack 2 (SP2) a Windows Messenger client without support for SIP is installed by default. You can easily get your SIP functionality back by installing Windows Messenger 5.1 and run a registry fix. Click here for instructions.

However, if you have a broadband connection you should protect your computer and/or LAN with a firewall, which leads to problems with SIP communication. The firewall needs to be SIP capable for everything to work properly. Read more about the firewall problems here.
